  1. I suppose I only used the front of the refrigerator like everyone else for the fun side of decorating. Of course the new one is stainless and clear of anything. I think you are absolutely right, and I need to do this.
I’m letting my kids redo the basement, so it’s a start right. They’re painting furniture, choosing pics to frame, and showing more whimsy than I ever could . I’m trying to be brave. And my MIL would totally approve -it’s me that’s the chicken.

  2. My MIL doesn’t like my curtains. I said to bad they’re mine and in my room. I love the color and that’s all that matters. I need to make time to do more of this. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. I LOVE mother in laws–mine is probably one of the best in the world and she has never said anything about my decorating other than positive things. But, for most people, unless you aspire to have your home look just like hers, it’s probably a compliment that she doesn’t like your curtains! Keep up the good work.

  4. I’m known for my love of stuffed animals (not the taxidermy kind!) and Build a Bear is one of my favorite places to go so on the back of my couch there is a lot of them, all wearing their finery 🙂

  5. Yes I do! I do what I want to do just because 🙂 I had my kids put their handprints down the hall wall, in brown paint for mother’s day of 2009 just because I thought, you know, their handprints are there anyway, why not make that a “border” down the hall! I stenciled a bible verse on my living room wall. I do things because I want to. I plan to paint a silhouette tree and a few birds on one wall eventually. I don’t care if anyone else likes it. It’s my home 🙂

  6. Well, there’s a few of the stuffed deer heads hanging around and fish. There is a wall where we hang odd stuff that we find on our walks. My cabinets are painted with sunflowers. We live in a log house, so to break up all the wood, the kids got a wall to paint however they wanted. One is all red and then red trim all around the room. The other is green with a huge black tree covering 2 walls. My dear mil thought we were crazy. But we have fun!

  7. I think my house is pretty fun, but now you are making me want to make it wacky fun! 🙂 I should ask my boys what they would want to change around here… unless it means painting the ceiling… I draw the line at my arms falling off from the work of it all. Boy would that take the fun out of it!

  8. Here in these parts we have surfboards for dining room tables! 🙂
Nester, I just love love love the way you teach kid friendly decorating that centers on what works for the reader’s own family in the most affordable way. You da bomb diggedy, girl.
And I love the goofy pictures more than stiff ones, too!
    Have a beautiful day!
    Kristen

  9. Love this. I painted my kitchen/dining room/office five different colors a couple years ago, and I love it. Different sections are difference colors, from pear green to grape purple, to lemon yellow, tropical blue, and a lovely raspberry red.
As for mothers-in-law. Mine is so much fun I’ve spent 20 years trying to become as free as she is decorating!

  10. We have a HUGE photo of a mariachi musician above our fireplace…just because we love him. Guests always ask if he is a relative and although we feel like he is because he has lived with us for 6 years, we have no idea who the guy is!
