I stood in front of my bathroom mirror, squinting from the lights above while also trying to open my eyelids so I could brush mascara on my lashes. My mouth opened too, almost instinctively. I wondered why opening my mouth also opened my eyes. It didn’t make sense and neither did the way I was feeling.
I had been struggling with paralyzing self-doubt that week, and it was making me question everything. Now here I was now, getting ready to travel to speak at a large women’s event and begging God to zap me with confidence or send Jesus back before I got there.
Although I felt honored when I was invited months before, now I questioned why I’d said yes. My internal dialogue was relentless…What if I forget my message? What if they don’t connect with my stories or laugh at my humor? What if…?
After I finished my make-up, I turned around to put something in my suitcase and I noticed a huge nine-foot shadow on the wall. I was surprised how big the shadow was, and how much it was distorting the image of my five-foot, two-inch frame.
All of a sudden, it dawned on me: my uncertainty had created a huge shadow—a shadow of doubt.
Just like my shadow on the wall was distorting my shape, my doubt was distorting my thoughts and overpowering my emotions with confusion and questions.
As I stood there looking at the humongous shadow, I sensed God whispering to my heart: You can only see the shadow because you have turned away from the light. Turn back toward the light. Slowly I turned back toward the lights above the mirror, and realized I was no longer standing in the shadow. And that was the day I discovered the shadow of my doubts.
In the shadow of doubt, insecurity paralyzes us with statements like:
“I can’t do this.”
“Things will never change.”
“My life isn’t going to get better.”
“I’ll never have the confidence I need.”
Those are some depressing thoughts, aren’t they? But oh how quickly they weasel their way into our minds and disguise their voices to sound like ours. Sometimes we agree with them and they become our own.
God doesn’t want us living in a cycle of defeat of dwelling in the shadows of doubt. In Isaiah 49:23, He says: “Then you will know that I am the LORD. Those who hope in me will not be disappointed.” Yet, doubt and hope cannot live in our hearts at the same time. As God’s girls, we need to know and believe that change is possible. We need to hope that life can be different. Otherwise, doubt will win every time and our hearts will be eroded by attitudes and emotions of defeat—but it is not supposed to be this way.
God declares with confidence that things can change—“See, I am doing a new thing!” “I am working all things together for good, because you love me and are called according to my purpose.” “All things are possible to {her} who believes” (Isa. 43:19; Rom. 8:28; Mark 9:23 NASB).
In my book, A Confident Heart, I talk about how we can identify and overcome our most common self-doubts. It’s a daily process but we can replace our lack of confidence with lasting “God-fidence” – as we learn to live in the security of His promises each day. This week I hope you’ll join me here as we learn how to move beyond believing in God to really believing Him by relying on the power of His Truth and living like it’s true, no matter what our feelings or circumstances tell us!

Growing up I lived with constant correction and criticism. I remember telling my parents something that happened during school, only to hear, “why did you say that, a good friend would have said it this way.” It crushed me to the point I would either not tell them anything, or lie to my parents and tell them what they wanted to hear. Even to this day I feel judged and like I have to defend my every move. I know in my heart I am a good wife, mother friend, employee etc. but those shadows of doubt constantly creep in.

You know what doubt whispers: Why did you think you could speak to all those ladies? You don’t have training like some of those others ladies…you are so stupid. You can’t get along with anyone, what if someone ask you a question and they decide to disagree with you, then what are you going to do. You should stay home and just write instead, not speak, you are putting attention on yourself instead of God and no one will listen to you. What are you going to say anyway? You need some new clothes and you are a mess. What if no one likes what you have to say? You are so selfish.
But when I read God’s promises: God, if you can use Gideon and he wasn’t trained. God, I need You to live through me and tell me what to say and do. God you said you would be my help and that all things work for good for those who love You and are called according to his purpose for them. You also said nothing was impossible with God. You are my strength. You promised never to live me. I don’t want to please people, just You, O Lord. I am not perfect, but You are. You get all honor and glory. You give all wisdom and knowledge. I love you. You are the One I trust. You are the one who leads me and it You who can give my heart courage. in Christ

I have been doing a lot of negative thinking lately and felt I couldn’t go on. Thanks so much for your book and the positive feed back I have been given reading it. I must admit I felt I was right in feeling that way but…I had to remember how would God look at this so I had to change my attitude. I now love my husband more (well not really love him more because he is the best) but love him more for what “I” thought he was doing wrong. It’s long story but our marriage is getting stronger every day now that I am looking at things differently. I have doubts just like everyone else and my marriage was one thing I was doubting but now I feel it getting stronger and stronger.
Many blessing to you and your ministry.

IN MY EARLIER 20’S I HAD A BREAKDOWN BUT HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS JUST A NERVOUS CONDITION. THEN IN 1984 IT HAPPENED AGAIN TO THE POINT THAT I HAD TO BE HOSPITALIZED. THEY TOLD MY HUSBAND I MIGHT NOT EVER COME OUT OF IT. IT WAS AWFUL TO KNOW THAT I HAD LOST MY MIND. THAT I HAD A MENTAL ILLNESS . IT HAPPENED EVERY FEW YEARS MY COFIDENCE WAS GONE. I FOUGHT HARD FOR A STABLE MIND. THEN I FOUND THE SCRIPTURE IN TIMONTHY . I HAVE NOT GIVEN YOU THE SPIRIT OF FEAR BUT PEACE AND A SOUND MIND. I GRABBED A HOLD OF IT MY HUSBAND GRABBED IT AND STARTED PRAYING IT OVER ME. LAST YEAR I READ CONFIDENT HEART AND IT LIFTED ME UP SO MUCH. I PRAISE GOD FOR HIS WORD. I HAVE A SOUND MIND. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS.

Diane C. Kennedy says
I would say about a month ago, I told the Lord I was tired of ‘eating’ corn husks. I accepted Christ into my life November 3rd, 1974. The only reason I remember is because I was given my own personal Bible the same day and I wrote the date in it. (I still have that same Bible, even though it is slowly falling apart. It has been my “road map” since accepting Christ. For me, it has been a ‘long’ journey of 37 years to finally get to where I am today. When these current of events started happening…this change from corn husks, I had decided to find something that would give me a Scriputre in my email each morning, as that would be the only way I would get some sort of nourishment for my day. I subscribed to Proverbs 31 Ministries and Girlfriends in God. Ever since I told the Lord that I was “sick and tired” of being “sick and tired” and I was tired of “eating” corn husks”, nothing has been the same! Proverbs 31 Ministiries as been part of that change in the respect that God has been talking to me “spiritually” since I made my final choice and decison, not to eat Corn Husks anymore. I have “actually” come to the “freedom” of “Here I am Lord, take me I am yours, use me in and for your Will, wherever and for whatever”. Nothing is holding me back…no family, no children, and especially “No husband”. I have always had this fear inside myself to completely give myself to the Lord for fear of “where” He would send me, “where” He would expect me to go”…I no longer have that fear….I am “willing”. I don’t even know what my whole point is in telling you this or sharing it with you….only to say God has spoken to me so much through the Proverbs Ministry. Every scripture I have gotten has spoken to me and to a particuar situation I was experiencing. I have missed for so long God speaking to me. In fact it was so much in the beginning, that I could not take it all in and finally had to say..”Lord, help me to settle down and be at Peace and to be able to take what I need and or the portion that I needed for the day.” I remember eating (not literally) reading God’s Word that I got to a point where I was actually getting sick because I could not take it all in, even though it was so good….and God gave me this scripture (which made me chuckle and laugh)…(Pro 25:16) Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
God certainly has a sense of humor. But I guess I just wanted to share the “good” with you today that God has given and the Proverb’s 31 has been part of who He has worked through. He gave me another message today through Proverb’s 31 for a friend who is anxiously waiting on test results for her son. This Monday was the second delay to the results. Our church is praying and Believing God for His Miracle in healing her son. Love you guy’s…love your minisrty….and I LOVE The Lord! Blessings in Christ…Diane

As a former missionary/mom/wife in a very lonely primitive area, I have dealt with these feelings over and over again. Back home now, having served with my pastor husband on staff of my home church and in women’s ministry, my husband and I have just stepped away for various reasons. My heart is truly aching in the dark and I am clinging with all my might, though feeling very weak. I have experienced so many times God’s love and His working out of impossible things for my good and His glory. I wonder who I am supposed to be now. Thanks for encouraging me today.

BUT when I read God’s promises: “See, I am doing a new thing!” “I am working all things together for good, because you love me and are called according to my purpose.” “All things are possible to {her} who believes” (Isa. 43:19; Rom. 8:28; Mark 9:23) I feel a peace that God is really in control and I need to release the situation to Him and let Him work through me.

I apologize for the comment i left earlier today. I was suppose to post something encouraging. Instead I did the opposite. I suppose I was reaching out but God is good and He is always on time. His words are encouraging and powerful and true. They’ll stand no matter what. God’s promises are full of hope and He’ll give us the victory if we hold onto them. Renee, you always remind me of how God can give me the confidence I need and how the enemy really tries to make me believe that the doubt in my mind are my own thoughts. Thank you, Renee, for your God inspired words.

defeated 1st , then ~ Victorious AND Hopeful! Thank God for the women of the Body of Christ on the internet… such encouragement and hope on days when sometimes one may be feeling the first…. then just in time, the Lord has us open a book, or read a short devotional, or pray, or call someone to encourage them & believe with and for them… and then slowly but surely, He opens up the springs of His waters and we are filled with new Life and new Hope and are re-assured of the Victory!

When doubt whispers: “I can’t do this. Things will never change. I’m not good enough” I feel defeated, dejected, inferior, unworthy. BUT when I read God’s promises: “See, I am doing a new thing!” “I am working all things together for good, because you love me and are called according to my purpose.” “All things are possible to {her} who believes” (Isa. 43:19; Rom. 8:28; Mark 9:23) I feel purposeful.

When doubt whispers: “I can’t do this. Things will never change. I’m not good enough” I feel like it true. I feel defeated before I even try. I’ve had a dream for the last 17 years now which I have been too afraid to pursue for these exact thoughts are what freeze me in my steps even though I have so many people supporting my dream and edging me on. My thoughts are my downfall. BUT when I read God’s promises: “See, I am doing a new thing!” “I am working all things together for good, because you love me and are called according to my purpose.” “All things are possible to {her} who believes” (Isa. 43:19; Rom. 8:28; Mark 9:23) I feel like the last 17 years have not been in vain. God has been using this time to mold me and grow me according to His will so when I do take that initial step I will do so as the woman He had created me to be. I know I have grown leaps and bounds in these last 17 years and a work I would endeavor on now would be much more pleasing to Him than anything I would have labored on my own before I walked following Him. I feel like my dream is not only possible but going to happen in His God given time and for His God given purposes.

Thank you for sharing your hearts, some of your stories and your very vulnerable emotions. I’m praying for each of you tonight. In asking this question my desire was for us to see the contrast of how we feel when we hear doubt’s whispers and our thoughts listen to them — verses how we feel when we read God’s promises and our hearts listen to HIM instead. Isn’t it amazing?? Oh the power of life-changing perspective of God’s promises!! What security is ours when we actively choose to live in HIM and what HE says and believes about us. Praying we will. {Blessings and prayers! I have loved being here with you this week!}
