  1. Rhonda,
What a powerful testimony. It touched my heart when the EEG read out registered that you had kissed your son in his sleep. I do wonder if God patiently waits until that moment that we completely reach the end of ourselves and say, “I quit.” I believe that’s when He quietly asks, “Are you really ready to utterly rely upon, depend upon, and completely trust in me?” I don’t believe hearts can be completely changed until perhaps they are broken. So thankful God doesn’t leave them that way, but restores and redeems. That’s the business He is in. Praising that your son witnessed your obedience (most lessons are caught vs. being taught) and dedicated his life to serving the One who got him and his mom through. Thank you for sharing so that we might have hope.
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    • What an awesome comment to a powerful story. I believe also that He makes that transformation in us after we come to the end of ourselves. I have certainly.seen it.
Sister Ann Sheil would always say.”empty yourself so God can fill you”. I am learning what that means, albeit slowly.

      • Rebecca,
He is an awesome and powerful God! I agree, when we come to the end of ourselvesHe transforms us more to the image of His Son for His Kingdom purposes and gives us a powerful testimony to glorify Christ.

“Empty yourself so God can fill you” what a wonderful quote. Thank you!

  2. This is huge: “When trials come — and they will — realize God can do more to train your kids to trust Christ through your obedience than through any words you can ever speak.”
Thank you, Rhonda, for persevering in faith and then sharing your story!
I’m looking forward to visiting your site.

    • Michele Morin,
Thank you for your comment. It’s difficult (in) the middle to remember that God is doing more to teach our kids about Himself by how we as parents respond amidst the storm.

I share Brandon’s story often when I speak at women’s events, and it’s included in my book #MomsRaisingSonstoBeMen. I am always so encouraged how God continues to use our trial to glorify Himself and (in)courage others who now find themselves (in) the middle of disparity.

Praise God for His faithfulness to do more than we can ever imagine through our stories as we keep our eyes mixed on Jesus (in) the storm.

  3. What a beautiful story. You are so right that when trials come, we do wonder where and why is our prayers not answered. I know God answers prayers, just not in the timing we want. He never forsake us even though we packed up our bags and head out. We have a God who loves us so much and sees us hurting. We must learn to hold on and remain faithful and trust that all things will work out according to His will. Thank you for sharing this story. Let us lean and trust on Him during all trials of our life.

    • Dear Maylee,
Thank you so much for your (in)couraging comments. God’s timing is most definitely perfect to accomplish all He has planned for us amidst the storm.

The trials are never wasted if we press in to our relationship with Christ, keep our eyes on Him, fight for joy and wait upon Him.

  6. In the middle of despair. Those words jumped of the page at me. Your story is beautiful and it has an ending. So grateful to God for you! But mine does not yet. Living 2 years in with a son who injured his spinal cord snow boarding. Paralyzed, but we believe he will walk again. It has been confirmed many times, even though they would medically say it’s not possible. He has already been a testimony to so many people! But my heart is in the middle of despair, one foot in hope and the other in agony. Seeing my athletic 22 year old this way has broken me. I pray God will heal and reveal! Being a caretaker is exhausting! The joy of the Lord is my strength, and the only way I can face another day.

    • Oh Kimberly,
My heart is broken for you, your son and your family. I cannot imagine the ache in your heart and the dispair you must feel. I wish I had the perfect words to lift your burden. But since mere words cannot I pray God’s Word gives you His peace, joy (in) the middle of your storm, and strength to be care giver to your precious son.

“Father we know You know, You see and You hear. We ask You to grant Kimberly a thankful heart amidst an unimaginably difficult situation. We pray that You glorify Yourself through Kimberly’s faith and choice to trust You even when this makes no sense. We beg You to mercy her son with healing and miraculous recovery to his injuries. In Jesus Name we ask You to do more than we can even imagine through this painful storm.”

Kimberly, whenever I’m stuck and need to refocus on Christ I pull out pen and paper and write out Psalm 119 while daily meditating on and praying through every stanza (writing out, meditate on and pray one stanza each day). This one act has been my lifeline. So much so that I’ve now memorized the first 55 verses of Psalm 119 (and with God’s help, I plan to one day have the entire chapter memorized.)

If you visit my site’s homepage you’ll see links to my radio interviews with Dr James Dobson FamilyTalkRadio. Doc and I talked at length about Brandon’s story and how God Dobson’s book “When God Doesn’t Make Sense” walked me through the season of Brandon’s illness.

I also want to encourage you with the love story in my new book #RealLifeRomance (Harvest House 2018). The story is how Nick (who was born without arms and legs) falls in love with Kanae (when he was convinced no woman would ever love him because of his disabilities) and how God uses this powerful couple to share the gospel in this generation.

      • Thank you for your encouragement and the idea of Psalm 119! My son’s name is also Nicholas (Nick) which means Victory. The support tee shirts we had made say Victory for Nick on the back and the front has a cross with his life verse on it, Isaiah 61:3. God gave that verse to me when he was born, and we cling to it! Bless you!

        • Praise the Lord. I’m praying now for God to grant Victory to Nicholas and to you as He uses for His glory and Kingdom purposes all that He is walking you through now.

      Sending hope and a prayer.

      • Thank you for your kind comment Rebecca.

  8. This is just what I needed to read today. My son too has seizures. His seizures started when he was 17 and a junior in high school. The medications the Dr.’s put him on made it so he had to drop out of school for a year. We are thankful that he was able to finish high school and he has started to go to college part time. We don’t know what his major will be in college but as he takes his general classes we are praying that God will guide him to the right career. It has been hard seeing the personality of our son change. He didn’t want anything to do with God for a while. He had always been a good kid and he felt like God had let him down. He has returned to having faith in God now that he is 20 and I am very thankful for that. I keep praying for more faith and trust that God has a hope and a future for my son.

    • Dear Christa,
I’ve felt your pain watching my son’s personality change because of the strong anti-seizure medication. I pray God shows you glimpses of the good He has planned for your son. And that His joy will be your strength as you keep your eyes on Him and remember that His ways are above ours, His thoughts above ours-as high as the heavens are above the earth so His ways are higher than ours.

  11. What a touching testimony, Rhonda. PTL for your son’s well-being, and for His plans prevailing — in our hearts and in our lives. ♥ (Kinda cheesy, probably, but sometimes it helps me to remember the saying, “It’s always darkest before dawn.” So many times when it feels like it’s been too dark for too long, it’s a good reminder, that the darkest part of the night isn’t in the middle of the night, but just before dawn steps in with light and relief.)

    • Hi Brenda,
Thank you for that reminder “It IS always daekerst before dawn” (and it’s not cheesy at all!)

For the many who have read my story and find themselves (in)dispair I am confident His light will shine brightest in the darkest of night, just before dawn.

  12. Thank you for your story. My son too suffered his first seizure as an older teen, I too prayed and begged God that it would be his last. It was not. I had asked God to strengthen his faith as he moved onto adulthood. Thought he would see the power of God at work, healing him. That was my way, my plan, not God’s. God has continued to work in his heart, i saw him grow in faith, serve wholeheartedly. God is good, God has His ways.

    • Dear Cellina,
My heart is with you and your son as you process the life altering situation of dealing with seizures. My niece began having seizures as a young adult and I’ve seen how hard it has been for her to process the loss of so much independence as a young adult who cannot drive and often has seizures while she is at work.

I’m (in)couraged to learn how God is using your sons trial to grow His faith and trust in a God. I’m Praying He does more than you can ever think to imagine as a result of your son’s seizures.

  13. Rhonda.

Such a powerful testimony! You hit the nail on this: when trials come & they will children will learn to trust God by our obedience. People in general will learn to trust God by observing our acts of love & reverence for God. I find that when we are at the end of our ropes God shows up & speaks tenderly to our hearts. We must remember this: God knows the plans He has for us.

    Blessings 🙂

    • Dear Beth Williams,
Thank you so much for taking time to (in)courage me with your comments.

  17. I am in the midst of despair so blinding I can’t feel my heart beating. I have adult children 29,23,20 and one teenager left. I feel so empty and sad at the state of our relationships right now that I don’t even know what to share. I just truly appreciated your words and believe and trust our gracious Lord led me to read them so I could find rest in Him.

    • Oh dear friend,
My heart melted with sorrow for you when I read your comment. It is incredibly painful when the relationships with our adult children are not what we had hoped they would be. I am so thankful, Elizabeth, that in His kindness our Father lead you to read this article. Please find encouragement in knowing He sees, and He hears your prayers. And Jesus promises to intercede on your behalf before the Throne.

I pray that as you press in to your relationship with Christ that He will grow the depth of your love for God in new and glorious ways. And I pray that as your adoration for Christ grows that His peace will rule in your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. And I ask God to cause His joy to be your strength (Nehemiah 8:10) so that your indescribable peace and joy amidst your heartbreak will be what God uses to draw your children to salvation if they’re not Believers and/or a deeper walk with Christ that spills over into their love for you.

In Jesus’ Name I stand with you in prayer dear one.
