Just 5 years ago I suffered from Blank-Wall-Itus. But not any more, because slowly I’ve become more comfortable with making my own wall art. Now I can barely bring myself to buy something off the rack for my walls…
That picture up there? I had an old canvas that we weren’t using anymore. So I grabbed a scrap of burlap and used the staple gun or glue gun (either gun will do) to attach it to the canvas so I had a burlap covered canvas. I also had an old odd shaped doily that I never knew what to do with so I used a few dots of hot glue to secure it to the canvas.
It took about 5 minutes and I had instant, easy, one of a kind, textural art. Poof, I’m an artist.
Finding things for the walls is the easiest part of creating a beautiful, meaningful home. I’m always surprised at what I can come up with when I’m determined to use what I have without spending much money.
Here are some other examples, try not to laugh, they aren’t for everyone…
sunburst mirror made from mostly poster board
plastic spoon laurel wreath yep, made from plastic spoons
and that green and blue canvas? I made that too, and I have no idea how to paint, I’d just rather paint than pay actual money for something
Just last week I found a big canvas for $8 at a yard sale, it wasn’t really my style but you can’t ruin what you don’t like in the first place, right? So I painted it.
And I have an entire pin board made up of easy wall art ideas.
What are your easy wall art ideas?

You know, what you’re doing is life changing. It is empowering. For years I’ve said that I am not an artist and not creative. I’ve felt defeated because we choose not to invest in the decor of our house, in terms of expenses. But, you help tap into the creativity that is already within each of us. That’s worship!

I love how the burlap canvas the doily looks like a peacocks feathers. Very cute and different I really love it. Thanks for being so inspiring.

I love a good use for an old crochet doily. If they are really handmade it breaks my heart to see them go wasted (someone spent HOURS making that). I have a feeling I’ll be altering your burlap and doily idea to fit into my decor very soon 😀

I follow this board, Nester (along w/all of your others), but this one is near & dear to my heart. Natch. I get a lot of “oh, you make it look so easy, I wish I could do that” with my paintings. Hello? You can! It’s just paint! It’s fun. It’s color. It smooshes and moves and flows and . . . yes, I’m a tad bit passionate.
I meant to comment on your turquoise abstract over the fireplace but life has had my hands full lately. How much fun did you have painting that? It’s simply gorgeous and that’s great, but the experience, the “smooshing”, wasn’t that the absolutely best part?

I’ve only been following you for a couple of months – but already I’ve been so inspired that I want to gut my house and just start over – well maybe just repaint…. EVERYTHING!
Thanks for your honesty, for your great story telling and for sharing all of your INCREDIBLE ideas. Love. Love. Love!

Wow, spoons? Cool!
I love making my own decorations too. I really like using my kids art.
It’s fun to honor them with hanging something they’ve made up for the world to see.

I love that you can decorate and look amazing the simplest things. My motto this year is to Live Simply and this fits right in with it.

I’ve never considered myself very artistically gifted (except with words!) but Pinterest and folks like you who share your creations are really feeding my creative side. 🙂

would like to add also to those who”have no talent” just jump in-it gets easier every time-if the first one isn’t perfect, go ahead and try something else-you will find you get better every time and will like what you create-it’s color, its fabric, its stuff-go ahead-just see what you can do

Cute and clever, as usual!
I am waiting on the arrival of the monogram art you posted on several weeks ago. Got it for hubby for Father’s Day. His initials are the same letters as his name and my name put together. So dual purpose, double the enjoyment. Planning to put a big old frame around it either over our bed or fireplace mantel. Can’t wait!

Okay, I have a challenge for you: when my mom passed away she left me a collection of Abalone shells that she had picked up off the beach near her home in Eureka, CA. I’ve been trying to think of ways to make them into wall art or a wreath of some sort. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
Denise says
Some great ideas there! Now, if only I knew where to get an inexpensive canvas.
