I never ever ever thought I would write a parenting book. Ever.
But you know how they say you should write what you’re passionate about, what you know?
Well, I know being a mother. Point in fact, it’s the thing I have absolutely the most experience in. You see, I didn’t graduate high school, go off to college, live a little, “find myself”, meet a cute guy, get married, revel a bit in coupledom, and then finally have me a baby or two.
Well, I did do most of those things, … just not in that order.
I married my high school sweet heart … while I was still in high school. In 11th grade, actually. I had my first baby during my senior year of high school. I graduated. I had brief semester long love affairs with college. I found bits of myself here and there. I lost bits of myself here and there. And I had 3 more babies.
I’ve literally been mothering my entire adulthood (and some of my childhood). I’ve never had the luxury of thinking only about myself. My job for more than a decade has been to be a mother.
And that is where the idea for Parenting Wild Things – Embracing the Rumpus was born.
Parenting Wild Things is about my biggest faults and failures as a mother. It’s about all the misconceptions in child-rearing that followed and plagued me from my own past and how God helped me to overcome them.
It’s about treating children with patience and respect. It’s about giving them our time, and protecting them from our own selfishness. It’s about embracing the second greatest commandment and treating our children the way that we want them to treat us.
It is written with the overwhelmed mom or dad in mind and born from the idea that everyone loves their children, but not everyone understands a few simple, respectful concepts for facilitating a lasting and loving relationship with them.
It is written with heaps and piles of grace and with the prayer that it will greatly bless and enrich the lives of the families that it touches.
