The video today will take place mostly within the context of chapters “Start Where You Are” and “The Chopping Block” but be sure to read through the end of Part One (p. 92). Some additional food for thought from each chapter:
Start Where You Are ~ “If you put in the time, the learning, the trying, the mess, and the failure, at the end you will have learned to feed yourself and the people you love, and that’s a skill for life….” (p. 41)
Go-To Risotto ~ “Learn, little by little, meal by meal, to feed yourself and the people you love, because food is one of the ways we love each other, and the table is one of the most sacred places we gather.” (p. 51)
Enough ~ “I want to cultivate a deep sense of gratitude, of groundedness, of enough, even while I’m longing for something more. The longing and the gratitude, both.” (p. 59)
The Chopping Block ~ “What I learned more than anything else that week is that we learn by doing.” (p. 65)
On Tea and Pajamas ~ “What I’m finding is that when I’m hungry, lots of times what I really want more than food is an external voice to say, ‘You’ve done enough. It’s OK to be tired. You can take a break. I’ll take care of you. I see how hard you’re trying.’ There is, though, no voice that can say that except the voice of God.” (p. 71)
Run ~ “But I have also long held the belief that one’s tears are a guide, that when something makes you cry, it means something. If we pay attention to our tears, they’ll show us something about ourselves.”
Hummingbird ~ “I was so thankful for the prayers of our community–for people who prayed with faith and expectancy and courage when all I felt was fear and dread.” (p. 87)

Wasn’t it great hearing more about Shauna’s childhood and what she really thought about her parents’ health food commitment? How has it encouraged you to realize her family didn’t have a ton of food traditions or that Angie loves watching the Food Network but fear of messing up has keep her from trying? Can’t we relate?
What new thoughts are you holding onto from Part One? Are you one who has been a Spectator of cooking shows or Reader of books but not a Tryer in the kitchen? Don’t you feel a bit braver after reading and watching the video?
Did any of the quotes above impact you, speak into your life, tell your story? There’s no way we can cover everything in the chapters so if something stands out to you, we’d love to hear your thoughts in comments below or on our Facebook page–don’t be shy!

I hope you’ll be comfortable sharing YOUR heart, perspective and cooking or community victories, especially if you’re tip-toeing out of your comfort zone and trying something new (satan would love to defeat you so let’s build one another up). Please take a minute to leave a comment and tell us how you’re doing and encourage one another–your words might be the very thing another incourage sister needs to hear.
Coming up Friday we’ll have our first guest post by Megan of Sorta Crunchy!! Thursday I’ll share a slight change in how we’ll be handling Guest Posts. There were so many submitted we’ve re-thought how to handle them, so please stay tuned for the update.
