“Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.
Practice Playing Second Fiddle
I have been hurt by community.
But never more than I’ve been blessed by it. If you look hard enough online and in your own communities, I bet you’ll discover what I’ve found — women with hurting hearts responding to one another with love. I have seen sisters who could choose to fall into envy, gossip, or negativity choose instead to encourage. They’ve practiced playing second fiddle.
When everything you see and read online and in the world looks like in-fighting and bitterness, I have found pockets of community full of women who are stronger and braver than they’ll ever know stand up and choose the hardest road there is — choosing encouragement over envy. They don’t run away, they don’t give up, and they don’t create drama.
They stand as sisters who know the power of an affirming word, even when you say it through tears and sad hearts. They don’t care that they don’t know one another in real life, and it doesn’t matter if they have the same background, upbringing, church denomination, educational choices, ethnicity, age, stage of life, or dreams for the future — they respond with respect because they simply treat others as they wish to be treated. They work hard to be good friends.
You are those women.
Today, let’s choose more of Christ and less of us — because that’s when community and friendships will thrive. And let’s hold on for dear life to what’s good.
What can you do to choose encouragement over envy today?
What “good” are you holding on to today?
